172 | Pastors and Deacons The Office of Pastor Part 5
In this episode, we explore the qualifications for elders, overseers, and pastors within the church, focusing on how we manage our own households, the importance of not being recent converts, and being well thought of by outsiders. We recognize that managing our household well isn’t about perfection but about credibility and character—if we can’t lead and maintain respect in our family, it’s hard to expect to lead the church effectively. We admit we all face struggles at home, yet the way we live and lead there reveals who we truly are. We also discuss that being a recent convert is a concern, because without maturity and experience in Christian community, pride might take hold, leading to failure in leadership. Finally, we understand the need to be respected not just inside the church but also by those outside, so that our reputation doesn’t bring reproach to Christ. We agree there’s grace in this process, and evaluation must be thoughtful and case-by-case, especially regarding family situations. Together, we acknowledge that these qualifications ultimately point to living a life marked by integrity and servant leadership, both at home and in the church, so that we can faithfully shepherd others and glorify God in all areas of life.
